Round the Fire Pit: Season 4 Ep 2 of Wynonna Earp

Welcome to our second 'Round the Fire Pit: a Round Table Discussion of Wynonna Earp!

We cannot thank our participants enough for putting up with our particularly wording questions this week.

  • Earpnado (@earpnado)
  • Docstache (@HollidaysStache)
  • Lynn (@lynn_rachels)
  • Office (@nedleysoffice)
  • Jody (@TheGoodJody)
  • Kayla (@ViewserAlert)
  • Lindsey (@xfbard)

This week was A LOT and we hope you enjoy our various keyboard smashes, ramblings, swooning, and what are sure to be very wrong theories!

So without further ado...

1. This episode covered a lot of ground, both in the story arc and emotionally.  Describe how you felt immediately after the episode ended and how you feel now that you have had some time to digest it.

Lindsey - I think that I was a bit stunned (in shock?) right after the episode ended.  Like, did I just see what I thought I saw? And 18 months, 3 weeks, and 4 days…..WHAAAT?!?  I did have to go and see that my AC was working correctly because it suddenly seemed a bit hot in my house.  I believe that my initial reaction was “Uh…wow…that was…ahem….wow.”  Welcome home Waverly, someone CLEARLY missed you. Hopefully Nicole kept the homestead stocked with Gatorade or something.

Now that I’ve had a bit of time to re-watch the WHOLE episode again, I am really concerned about the damage that a year and a half of isolation has done to Nicole.  When she first emerged from the homestead she seemed so broken and exhausted. How do you move forward when everyone you love just drops back into your life like they only left yesterday and you have been fighting to stay alive not knowing if they will ever come back to you? The relief she clearly felt at having Waverly back was palpable, but so was the pain that she had endured. I mean, how many times have we seen Nicole break down in tears? Oof, the entire episode was amazing, but those last 10 minutes really brought the feels, both happy and heartbreaking.

Jody – I’ve re-watched the show a few more times after it aired (and by few, I mean every non-working waking moment), so it’s hard to separate how I felt immediately afterwards but here it goes. I was energized, excited and proud because 1) did you see those last 10 mins! As Office tweeted, I may need “a lie down”, 2) the story just opened up and there are so many possibilities in store for all our favorite characters, and 3) probably most importantly, I felt a sense of amazement and gratitude for this show and cast. Positive LGBTQ+ representation is very important to me.

As someone who came out as queer/bi/pan later in life (let’s just say I had a few decades of adulthood before fully admitting/accepting it), this show has had a huge impact on me. I think I spent a lot of my early adulthood confused and fearful about my sexuality. Whenever I had a fleeting moment of bravery and tried to explore it, I never saw anyone who was like me. It was super confusing and ultimately, just “easier to be straight”. But as many of you may know, not being your authentic self has an impact. It weighed on me for decades, and I didn’t realize how much I was drowning under all that weight. It took a lot of reflection and a willingness to accept that I was no longer willing to let fear dictate how I live. And eventually, I got there :) And now that I have been here for a bit, I wonder how things could have been different if maybe I had seen Wynonna Earp when I was younger.

Also, although I feel such joy in seeing something so positively represented, I know the Latinx community felt misrepresented. It would be easy to not include this statement in my response, but I feel like it is important to acknowledge it. Diverse, positive representation has come so far, but we still have a long way to go, especially for BIPOC.

Office  Initial reaction…. *blink* *blink* home *cries* throne *side eye* stairs *heavy breathing* 18 months? *wat?* *cries* Purgatory? *da fuk?* reunion *ded* *aklsdjfha;dshg* blackout from feels

More time to digest reaction:  *blink* *blink* home *cries* throne *side eye* stairs *heavy breathing* 18 months? *wat?* *cries* Purgatory? *da fuk?* reunion *ded* *aklsdjfha;dshg* blackout from feels

Lynn – Immediately after the episode (lasting well over an hour), I turned the TV off, reclined in my chair, and contemplated just how overwhelmed I was about the story progression from Episode 1 into Episode 2 (I see episodes 1&2 as a two-part premiere), the brilliant performance of Kat Barrell, the incredible performances by the actors, the cold weather, all the questions about Eve, the #WayHaught love scene, the unsettling look of Purgatory, and the time jump (18 months, 3 weeks, 4 days)! Needless to say, I did not answer my questions or solve any of the issues running around in my brain during that time! I can tell you that I had a smile on my face and smile in my heart while I was sitting there! Now that a couple days have gone by, I am still not sure I can verbalize any better my feelings, but I can say that I absolutely crave all the jokes, the one-liners, the Pop cultural references, the shout-outs, and the love I feel radiating from the screen. Wow, I am an enormously proud Earper and love everything about this Little Shit Show!

Docstache – My first thought was “WHY CAN’T DOC AND WYNONNA EVER GET MORE THAN TWO SECONDS OF WYNDOC, ROMANTICAL, SEXY TIME?!?!?!”

After digesting, my thought is: “WHY CAN’T DOC AND WYNONNA EVER GET MORE THAN TWO SECONDS OF WYNDOC, ROMANTICAL, SEXY TIME?!?!?!”

Kayla – I think for a good 30 minutes after the episode, I sat hyperventilating and SCREAMING on twitter (I know, what’s new, right?). Immediately following the 30 minutes breathe and tweetfest, I immediately fired up my SyFY app and watch the entire episode again. It felt like I needed to see it again to believe that we really a. got an episode with Wynonna at peak Wynonna b. got a Nicole centric episode, and c. I THINK YOU GUYS KNOW WHAT C IS, SEE ANSWER TO #2 !!! Now that I’ve had time to digest those delicious 43 minutes of television, I just feel proud. I feel proud of what an absolute badass Kat Barrell is, and thrilled that she was given a chance to show off those acting chops. From playing Eve, with not even a fig leaf to keep Doc Holliday from seeing HER garden, to playing a vulnerable best friend, to being the best lover to ever lover... she proved that she really can do it all. I feel proud of the writing team, and of Emily, that they trust us as an audience to figure things out for ourselves and give room for our theories to run wild. And also, I feel proud that OUR show, the one that we fought for (for what felt like 18 months, 3 weeks, and 4 days) was not only back and better than ever, but will go down (no pun intended) in history as having that iconic W|W love scene on cable television. It’s a good time to be an Earper, friends.

Earpnado – Immediately after? Drunk. Hot. Tingly in a totally normal part of my body. Now? I definitely haven’t watched it 61 times. And even if I did it was only for research for these questions because I have integrity.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. You know we have to ask...what are your thoughts on the “reunion” scene(s). (You can pick #WayHaught or #WynDoc or both)

Lindsey  Am I supposed to have any thoughts in my brain after that WayHaught reunion?  I’m pretty sure the only thing I was thinking was “damn” and “oh,” and “did they really just....on the stairs....?”  In all seriousness, that scene was amazing from start to finish. It was beautifully shot and beyond capturing the emotional impact of the moment it was groundbreaking. Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would get that scene. All the accolades to everyone involved in bringing those moments to our screen.  I can’t imagine the level of trust it must take to allow yourselves to be filmed in such an exposed and vulnerable state.  I will forever be grateful to Dom and Kat and Emily for being so committed to bringing these two beautiful characters to life and allowing us to feel the emotional and physical connection that Waverly and Nicole have.  Nope, I’m not getting emotional...I swear I’m not....damn it, not again.

I want to say a few words about the WynDoc reunion as well.  Look, Doc and Wynonna are complicated with a capital C, but at the end of the day you know they care deeply about each other. You might even say they love each other, because lord knows they can’t say it themselves. Once Doc realized that the Wynonna he was fighting in the garden was the REAL Wynonna his whole demeanor changed. He went from Waverly’s guard vampire to the Doc we all know and love.  There is a sensitive soul somewhere deep inside that cowboy and we really only see glimpses of it when he is around Wynonna and Waverly.  And Wynonna, I think we’ve heard her refer to him as her baby-daddy more times in two episodes than in S2 and S3 combined.  Vampire fangs and bad decisions aside, she loves him, she just needs to embrace it. I do hope that those two work it out, they both deserve some happiness.

Jody – Did I “accidentally” turn on the porn channel again???? In all seriousness, it was pretty epic but my favorite part was the conversation afterwards between Nicole and Waverly. The tenderness and love between these 2 characters (and all the characters) is wonderful to see, and also, what the hell has been going on in Purgatory for the last 18 months + 3 wks + 4 days?????

Office – My comments here are long and, well, long, and are 100% devoted to the ‘reunion’ aka ‘hot emotional sex’ between Waverly and Nicole. I don’t want to mince words – that’s what this was: a hot and emotion filled and exquisite sex scene that was groundbreaking and earned and beautiful.

So, where to begin? Well, I’ll start with me. In short, I was not expecting THAT at all. I was SO emotional about the Waverly/Nicole initial hug at the homestead and Nicole asking if Waverly was real and I was tearing up along with Nicole and Waverly that, yes, they were real and they were together, and I’m thinking “make out, you beautiful idiots!” But then the next thing I know we’re in the middle of this super sensual stair sex and I'm just staring at my TV completely enraptured and utterly blown away and I don’t think I blinked or even breathed.

Truly, I didn't expect anything like that for all of S4, or ever, really. When they were talking about the new timeslot and both Kat/Dom hinted at more intimacy, I was thinking, sure, 'grinding/moving under the sheets' or 'one sitting on the others’ hips while we see their back and there is a blanket conveniently draped about them' – because that is all that we have ever gotten before if we were lucky and if we were straight. But, then... then we got this. Between two women. We got this scene that is explicit and exposed and real and felt and set-the-stairs-on-fire hot.

And there is a reason we are talking about it this much.  I mean, we wouldn’t be talking about it if it was anything like what we’d seen before on basic cable (because it isn’t). And I also don’t think we’d be talking about it if it was anything like what we’d *felt* before while watch a similar scene (because it isn’t).

So let’s talk about the feelings a bit.... there has been a lot of talk about the fact that this wasn’t meant for the male gaze (which is 10000000% true), and I totally agree with that. But there was also this part of me that felt like this scene wasn’t really for *anyone’s* ‘gaze’. It was two people who were expressing these deeply powerful emotions – emotions of longing and desire and connection and love – physically. It was intimate and pure in that way and not meant for anyone’s eyes.

But then... that’s part of the beauty of the scene, as well. Because, yes, it is two women unabashedly having these emotions and expressing them physically as, you know, two women in love do! It *was* meant for our eyes; it was meant for the Earpers’ and WayHaught shippers’ gaze. This was an explicit gift to us for seeing so much of ourselves in these characters and believing so much in these characters and fighting so much for these characters. So, yes, this WAS made for our gaze and I totally admit that I have gazed upon this scene more than once or twice, and I am not ashamed of that nor should anyone be.

This scene wasn’t exploitive, it wasn’t gratuitous, but it was explicitly and purposefully sensual and sexual and emotional and real and loving and powerful. And it was beautiful. And I accept this gift as it was offered on all these levels.  Thank you Kat and Dom for making yourselves so vulnerable, thank you Emily for writing this amazing reconnection between these two characters, thank you Paulo for the absolutely stunning direction, thank you Syfy for airing it.

Signed, a gentle (and appreciative) perv  ;)

Lynn – Let me say again, that I am a huge fan of the 10pm time slot! I am also a huge fan of #WayHaught and #WynDoc! So, both reunions were very touching in my eyes. The #WynDoc banter during their fight scene leading up to the kisses was priceless! From this moment forward in every situation, my safe word is going to be Dollywood. As we know, these two are a train wreck at times, but they love each other very much! Plus, they make one hell-of-a-great team! The #WayHaught reunion scenes were in a league of their own! The emotions on the faces of Nicole and Waverly when they run towards each other in front of the homestead took my breath away! The incredibly sensual, beautifully lit, love scene was nothing short of mind-blowing! So perfect, so heart-warming, so real! Then finding out about the time jump made both of the #WayHaught reunions even more intense in the mind and heart of Nicole! Wow, just wow!

Docstache – WARNING: If you don’t like sex discussions, don’t read my answer.

My glasses are still fogged up. Wayhaught Damn! That was some serious sexin! And what I dug was it was a melding of “love making” & “fucking.” Which I personally feel is the best sex. (Sidenote: I don’t see “fucking” as a negative action. It’s just another form of having sex. To me there is no negative connotation to the term. In fact, I highly recommend it) It had the softness & tenderness that comes with being deeply in love, but also had the urgency & passion of two women who had not seen each other in a year and half. Surely that aching was at a DEFCON 1, and that can lead to some intense physicality. I thought it was PERFECTLY depicted.

As for WynDoc.....HOLY SWOON. Tim & Mel convey such incredible chemistry between Doc & Wyn. When those two smooch, fireworks explode into the air. Doc’s “so am I,” in reference to being Wynonna’s is right up there with “I Am All In” for me now. But I’ll never understand how Wyn doesnt just jump that dude’s bones. (I feel like if Mel interjected right now, she would say “you mean his BONE singular?) Oh, and also, I think they should try out those stairs at the Homestead as well. Or...OOOOO, the back of Wyn’s truck! TRUCK SEX!

Kayla – Kicking this response off with WayHaught, because I will short circuit if I go too long without praising the actors, director, and writers that pulled this scene off. When we saw the transition of the pair embracing outside to the Homestead hallway, my immediate reaction was to pull my knees into my chest and smile. BIG. They were back together again guys!!! Then the music. Then the zoom out. Then the beautiful camera work, and lighting, and shot transitions. That’s when my hands came to either side of my head, slowly shaking it from left to right. Was this really happening? Did we really wait for 2 years for our show to come back to us, and now the moment so many of us waited for was HAPPENING?! I think we all know what comes next. #Stairgate2020. The most beautiful, authentic, raw, emotional reunion that I have seen on telelvision, let alone between two female characters. I have no time to argue this point, I WILL DIE ON THESE STAIRS. But seriously, I know how important it is to be able to see yourself in the media you consume. I’ve seen others say that they’ve waited 10, 20, 30 years for this kind of representation. And to have the respect and care that was so obviously taken to craft it just means so much. I also recognize my privilege in having felt seen in this episode, when many others did not. I want to acknowledge the validity of those people, and of their emotions. They are always welcome with me.

The WynDoc scene was everything that I’ve ever wanted from them. I have shipped those two from the first romp in the woods, but the chemistry and angst between them last season really sealed the deal for me. When they kissed under the mistle toe? When he reveals that he’s a vampire? When he sucks the venom out, and goes to protect Waverly? I CAN’T TAKE IT YOU GUYS. When their eyes (and mouths) meet, you can just see the love between them. I also can’t help but picture Wynonna explaining to Doc who Dolly Parton is, and why Dollywood is the perfect safe word. I wonder if they’ll take Alice someday.

Earpnado – Both reunions were perfect. WynDoc had to use their safeword within seconds of reuniting, and WayHaught barely made it past the front door.  Bless Emily Andras for being a true gentlewoman and at least throwing in some foreplay for Earpers via the blazing pace of sex jokes and innuendos leading up to THE scene.  I know we have nothing to do with making the show, but I honestly felt proud of that scene.  They trusted us with that.  We respect them, they respect us, and out of that love and respect was born this beautiful gift to those of us who have yearned our whole lives to see that part of us on screen.  Almost like we had been climbing a staircase and finally reached the top.  Also I hope that young Valdez was not in the house, like maybe she was busy popping into Purgatory to get extensions.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Eve seemed to be curious if Waverly knew why Bulshar wanted into the garden.  She was also hell bent on getting out to make humanity “pay” for her imprisonment.  Ultimately, she was blasted through a door to parts unknown.  Do you think we’ll see Eve again? What about Bulshar? Do you think they are connected in some way?

Lindsey  I think Bulshar is gone, vanquished, smited…smote…smoted?  Anyway.  I DO think that Bulshar knew Eve.  Bulshar was THE snake. So potentially he was the biblical snake that corrupted Eve before she was imprisioned.  Going on that theory I think Bulshar wanted into the garden to free Eve and the two of them would then have reigned hell down upon the “realm of men.”  Can you imagine the damage the two of them could do?!

Oh no, I don’t think we are done with Eve in any way, shape, or form.  I’d kind of like it if she didn’t have Nicole’s face in the future, but....

So, what if the portal that Eve went through took her directly back to the Ghost River Triangle, while the one Wynonna, Waverly, and Doc went through dropped them 18 months into the future.  It’s possible that Eve is the one responsible for everything that has happened in Purgatory.  Food for thought.

Jody – I think Eve is the new mayor of Purgatory, but whose form has she taken? Right now, I am also wondering [SPOILER ALERT FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT WATCHED SCENES FOR NEXT WEEK]…

If Wynonna has been gone for 18+ months, why the hell is Chrissy Nedley beating her up? Is it because she let a whole bunch of zombies into Purgatory? Is Eve in Purgatory pretending to be Nicole, Wynonna and/or Doc at various points in the last 18+ months, causing the real Nicole to barricade herself in the Homestead, making Wynonna a wanted criminal, and making Doc the evil Mayor of the town?? And maybe what looks like a weird demon wedding with Doc and maybe Nicole in next week’s episode is actually Eve pretending to be Nicole marrying Doc???? And also, did i just take some heavy drugs because none of these sentences make any sense.

Regarding Bulshar, I can’t add another person to this mix of crazy that is happening in the paragraph above. I DON’T KNOW ANYTHING AND MY HEAD HURTS!

Office – OMG, is Bulshar Adam? Maybe Bulshar/Adam was just trying to get back to his soul mate, Eve!??  How wonderfully screwed up would that be?!?! I mean, I have no idea, but, honestly, I don’t think Eve’s question about whether they even bothered to try to figure out why Bulshar wanted to get into the garden was a throw-away line, I think it either was going to mean something or was a little seed planted that could be revisited at some point. Then again, what do I know?  Also, I do think Eve will show up again in Purgatory; she’s a too amazingly delicious and devious character not to! But again, *da fuk* do I know?

Lynn – Eve, Eve, Eve! I quandary of questions about the shape-shifting demon. Yes, I think we will see Eve again! Heck, I am not sure Wynonna and Company aren’t going back to a Purgatory run by her. I mean, she could be anybody! When Doc kicked her through the portal, quite a bit of time elapsed in the Garden, so maybe that 18 months, 3weeks, and 4 was just enough time for her to start a cult of her own. She did tell Doc that she planned to get what she was owed in Purgatory. Another thought that keeps dancing around in my head is that Willa’s name at the commune was Eve in Season 1! A coincidence, I think not! Maybe young Willa did die, and Eve took her body. The Willa we saw in Season 1 was Eve all along and Wynonna did shoot her, not killing her, but the tentacle creature took her back to the Garden. Eve and Bulshar are connected. He tried to get into the Garden to let her back out and failed! All I can say is I do not think it wise for our crew to trust anyone!

Docstache – I have such a hard time predicting this stuff being that I’m never ever right. Are there any Earpers that are EVER right? I’d love to see Bulshar again because he was a great Big Bad. He was so creepy & scary that one time Jean Marchand (Bulshar) liked one of my tweets and when I got the notification it gave me the heebie-jeebies. But yes, of course Eve and Bulshar are connected. He’s the serpent; she’s Eve.

Kayla – I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Eve. The line that stuck with me was when Eve tells Waverly that she succeeded where the “snake had failed” in letting her out of her prison. Biblically, the angels with the flaming swords have been placed to protect the garden from intruders entering, which is also what Julian told Waverly. But it seems that Eve and Doc (and angelically possessed Waverly) seem to think that the garden is a prison for Eve. That being said, what was keeping Eve in the garden all this time, without Julian or Juan Carlo there? The human fed blood machine? What about that giant hairball from the well? Is that just the throat of a subterranean monster that’s about to fuck things up now that the garden has been abandoned? What will Julian’s ring being left in the garden mean? STILL SO MANY QUESTIONS. I do think that Bulshar has to be connected to Eve somehow. Again, biblically, the snake it the one who tempts Eve to eat from the Tree of Life, causing her to be ripped from her perfect paradise and made aware of evil in the world. That girl seems PISSED, and Julian did say that humanity fell at the hands of the snake. I have a feeling we may be waiting a while for an answer on this one, though.

Earpnado – Should we be worried about a shapeshifting biblical creature who seemed to know things about Purgatory and has a serious grudge against humanity being sent to an unknown place who could show up at any time but we wouldn’t even realize it b/c she can take the form of whoever she wants so in every scene throughout every episode to come ever we have to worry that one of them is not really themselves but rather evil Eve returning to exact her revenge on our beloved characters?  I mean I guess.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Kat Barrell really shined this week, what do you think about the many “roles” she played; from demonic Eve to best friend to lover? What were some of your favorite moments from this acting tour de force?

Lindsey  Kat never ceases to amaze me with her acting range and skill.  We got a glimpse of just how subtle and nuanced she can be when Nicole was possessed by Maeve and how funny she can be whenever she is Drunk!Nicole, but this was a whole new ballgame. While playing Eve she conveyed such malice with just a simple look or gesture.  And basement Nicole! Poor Nicole.  She’s broken, scared, and selfless all at the same time. I always love Girlfriend!Nicole. She is just so devoted and loving. Bravo to Kat!  Not everyone can play three different “roles” in one episode and make them so vastly different and recognizable. If I am picking favorites, I would say Girlfriend!Nicole is my favorite.  Maybe it is just me falling into the fantasy (not THAT fantasy, get your mind off of the staircase) of Nicole as this white knight riding into the bleakness of Purgatory.  Eh, whatever, can I keep her?!?

As for my favorite moments from this week, I have two. The first is when Nicole convinces Wynonna to leave her behind.  Nicole is SO tortured.  She wants to help save Waverly, but she’s really injured and she knows only Wynonna can do it.  And to free Wynonna to make that leap without guilt, that’s true friendship (love).  Even when she is sprawled out on a dirty warehouse floor with tear-tracks on her face, Kat is superb.  The second is during WayHaught’s conversation on the stairs. Nicole is so rarely completely vulnerable.  And in that moment, having Waverly back after such a long time, she finally allows herself to break down. She weeps. Tears of joy, relief, and perhaps sadness over the time they’ve missed out on.  Kat’s face before and after that moment just break me. Man, she’s soooo good.

Jody – It was so fun to see Kat play so many unique roles in one episode! She rocked it! That said, my favorite moments were when she was Nicole, both in her quips with Wynonna and at the end of the episode. From the minute she stormed out of the Homestead, gun blazing, to her relief at realizing she was seeing Waverly for the first time in 18 months + 3 wks + 4 days, to finally allowing herself to release and cry in Waverly’s arms – those were my favorite moments.

Office – Oh, yeah! Kat was amazing this week and I’m so excited for her to have been able to play all these different roles! I LOVED her portrayal of Eve. While she was trapped under that cherry tree, she would go from having these soft expressions when addressing and trying to fool Waverly but the moment her back was turned, Eve would have this subtle eye role or expression of annoyance / frustration. And her smile as Eve just wasn’t Nicole’s smile, there was no warmth behind it. Then out on the lake, when Eve was dragging Waverly to who knows where, the way Eve sneered at Waverly was just chilling. It really was this moment of – this ‘person’ looks exactly like Nicole but there is absolutely nothing of Nicole in this person. You go, Kat! Amazing work! But that being said, and Eve aside, my single favorite moment was just the intensity of the look Nicole gave Waverly when Waverly said, “I love you.” It was so full of so many emotions.  Ugh!!  *cries again*

Lynn – Kat Barrell hit a grand slam this week! She was incredible! So on point with her expressions, her voice changes, her inflections, her emotional moments, and her total commitment to each character! In one of the recent articles I read, it talked about how Melanie can say so much with so little words or no words at all. That is so true, but Kat has also shown us many sides to Nicole and to her own acting versatility! I put Kat right up there with Melanie! How lucky are we that these incredible actresses can tell a story in so many ways! My favorite moments in the episode  are the Best Friend moments that take place in the Gate Room. Lines like: “Whatever you are, you’re my ass!”, “No, we’re two friends.”, “Best friends. She said it first, there’s no take-backs, right?”, “I can’t believe I may be stuck with you forever.”, “Actually, only you can. It has to be you, Wynonna. It was always going to be you.”, and “Don’t you dare leave her alone!” are only a few quotes from the dialog over several scenes with Wynona and Nicole that stole my heart! These two have come a long way and we can only hope to have such a “Ride or Die” friend in our life! Crazy, crazy good!

Docstache – So here’s the thing: I tend to focus all my attention on Doc Holliday and the majority of the time everyone else becomes a blur. But I’ll tell you what, Kat ALWAYS grabs my attention when she goes all evil. I loved her Maeve portrayal in S3. And she was BADASS in "Friends In Low Places." I see a lot of natural, acting ability when she goes evil...even a little twinkle in her eye. You can definitely tell she loves being the Big Bad. Also, her version of evil reminds me of being around someone who has done a bunch of coke. I think Waverly said something about "Why does evil you always talk a lot?!"

Kayla – I hit this a bit in my answer to question #1, but WOW that lady sure can act. There were three moments from the episode that had me smiling like a girl on her first trip to Dollywood. First, the scene with Wynonna before Wyn jumps through the mystical BBD portal to the garden. The tear stained cheeks, the selflessness of knowing that Wynonna can’t do what she needs to do if she’s dragging dead weight with a broken leg behind her (no many how many tricep dips she does). When her voice cracks when she says “I just haven’t had a chance to tell Waverly yet” – this was such a beautiful parallel to episode one. We go from the “like I would tell YOU first” Nicole who thinks they are hours away from getting their angel back, to a Nicole who tells her best friend that she’s engaged, because Wynonna may be the only one she gets to tell. Second, a pissed off Eve dragging Waverly though the garden. We know from episodes like Jolene that Kat can play mean, but DAMN that girl can play straight up evil too. The sneaky facial expressions, the slinkiness of her movements. Even the way she tosses Waverly around just really sell to the viewer that this is one bad bitch demon. Who can ROCK a flower suit. The last moment, OF COURSE, is the reunion outside of the Homestead. The lip quivers. The blinking away of tears. The mouth hung open in disbelief. The voice crack and stumbling over words when she asks, “Are you real?” The emotion she brought to that scene is the best I’ve seen from her. Again, just so PROUD!!

Earpnado – It’s pretty cool that the writers gave Kat such a heavy lift – what a testament to what they think of her as an actor.  She’s an absolute force, and I’m glad that they’re letting her explore so many different corners of her talent.  It’s like they said “Hey Kat can you play happy, angry, evil, horny, dramatic, funny, badass all in one ep?” and Kat was like “Fuck yeah” and they said “Cool cool also you’ll be naked most of the time ok byeeee”.   And she knocked it out of the park, League of Their Own style. Except she didn’t drop anything (unless you count Nicole and Waverly’s clothes on the homestead foyer).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. Life in Purgatory is clearly not as it was pre-Garden. Nicole had to “retreat” to the homestead, she’s trigger happy over any movement outside, and people are being hung on Main St.  Who/what do you think is in charge of Purgatory and thus responsible for all this?

Lindsey  That’s the question of the week ahead, isn’t it?  Part of me thinks that Eve has to be involved in some way, but another part of me thinks some cult (of bad people? Vampires? Zombies?) has taken up residence in Purgatory.  Maybe they were called to by Eve who is trying to exact her revenge on the GRT.  I don’t know.  SOMEONE or SOMETHING has turned Purgatory from a sleepy supernatural town into the Wild West. Some malignant force.  I am especially interested to see Chrissy Nedley and her explanation for the gallows.  Also, where the hell is Nedley? Maybe I WILL get my “get off my lawn Nedley” after all!

Jody – Ummm, this question clearly makes my head hurt, as noted in my response to question 3.

Office – Well, I did answer earlier that I thought we’d see Eve again in Purgatory and, in fact, I think we’ll see her now. Because who could be responsible for kids playing hockey under gallows? Eve. It’s Eve. The portal that Eve was booted through brought her back to a time 18 months, 3 weeks, and 4 days ago.  She kidnapped Nedley and threw him in a basement with Mercedes where they are exchanging stories about how terrible it is to be attacked by demonic duck-sized creatures with more than four legs and then have their faces stolen. So, long story short, Eve looks like Nedley. This adds to Nicole’s angst to think that not only are all her friends gone, but the one that’s still here (Nedley) has turned his back on Nicole and also on kindness and instituted this brutal, dystopian Purgatory. Yes, I am sure I’m right: it’s definitely Eve wearing Nedley’s form. (Narrator: no, Office was not sure at all, she’s really just making sh*t up as she goes).

Lynn – Well, I know I’m wrong because I always am, but as I stated in the 3rd question, I think when Eve was booted out of the Garden, she returned to Purgatory in human form (not sure who yet) to start raising hell and creating chaos. Nicole retreated to the homestead to keep it safe because the crazies were going to destroy it! It sure is going to be interesting to hear what has transpired while they were gone all those months!

But if that’s not the case, maybe it’s the rogue government agency (BBD maybe?) that swooped in and evacuated the town? When the big bad Bulshar was defeated, they decided to no longer nuke the town, bring the people back, and send in an army to run everything? Maybe it’s a combination of both?       ***Throws hands up in the air***I don’t really know?***

Docstache – Since there’s no way in hell I’ll ever get this right, I’m gonna say either Bunny is in charge, drunk with power, & just hangin peeps right and left or...and this is pretty much just me self-indulging, BoBo Del Rey is back. Like what if during that whole Bulshar snakebite thing the curse wasn’t 100% broken yet and Wynonna’s heart stopped beating for a millisecond before Doc sucked the poison out, and therefore BoBo the revenant was resurrected and now is running shit in Purgatory? I know there are a million billion reasons why that’s not plausible. I just want BoBo back.

Earpnado  It’s cute that you think we could predict anything that is coming next.  I’ve given up even trying.  The bus goes where it goes, I just try to hang on and not drink too many chestnut lattes so I don’t have to pee too often.

6. Once Waverly realized that Nicole was actually Eve in disguise, she seemed to fully embrace her ‘destiny’ and sat on the throne in order to keep Eve trapped.  What are your thoughts about Waverly’s behavior while she was in Guardian mode?

Lindsey – I think that as soon as Waverly realized that the figure in front of her WASN’T Nicole she began to feel more of a pull by the garden “force.”  As long as “Nicole” was there she still had a strong tether to her life back in Purgatory.  Once that string was snapped she seemed to be overwhelmed by the garden’s insistence that she fulfill her birthright. Maybe the garden needed her to despair before it could really keep her. IDK, that seems strange even to my eyes…I have to wonder just how strong the garden’s pull on her was. Even once Wynonna showed up and convinced her to leave she still had to physically pull Waverly off the throne. I feel like no one other than Wynonna had enough influence to break through the garden haze and bring her home.  Huh….exactly like Nicole said.  Nifty.

Jody – I think she was the failsafe and did what was needed to save humanity: once the garden is threatened, go into survivor mode and follow 7 simple steps.

1 - Let your vampire friend know that you will not let Eve leave her prison. Check.
2 - Place your hands on said vampire’s head and cause him to scream in pain so he will not try to stop you. Check.
3 - Go towards throne and sit in chair by climbing over top of said chair (why not just walk around to the front of chair and sit???). Check.
4 - Announce aloud to no one that you are the failsafe. Check.
5 - Argue with your sister about being the heir and talk about destiny. Check.
6 - Decide to say screw it and live your own damn life. Check
7 - Exit garden. CHECK

Yup, this all makes sense.

Office – Okay, I’m going to say it: I. Did. Not. Like. Guardian!Waverly. She scared the fudgenuggets out of me! She went all head squeeze on Doc, she bounced Wynonna right off the throne platform, and she was clearly in control of the wind itself as her hair looked AMAZING blowing all over the place like that, I mean, WOW (lol). But no, really, Waverly was cold and emotionless on that throne. The whole ‘Guardians aren’t allowed to love’ and the pure lack of care she seemed to have for anyone (until Wynonna broke through to her by bringing up Nicole). Waverly has always been such the epitome of sunshine and warmth, so to see her so cold was hard. I… I hope the throne never gets her in its thralls again, and I will always be wary knowing it might still be out there calling to her. *side eye*

Lynn – We have seen, as the seasons have progressed, that these characters have built a foundation of love, trust, friendship and family. There is nothing Wynonna, Waverly, Doc, Nicole, and Jeremy wouldn’t do for each other! When Waverly figured out that Garden Nicole was Eve and Eve made it perfectly clear that she was going to kill all of them, Waverly did not hesitate to step up on that throne to protest her family. She saw what shape-shifter Eve was capable of and her duty as the Guardian was forefront in her mind! Waverly knows she must keep Eve trapped in the garden. Thankfully, after Eve is booted by Doc and Wynonna’s heart-felt reminder that Waverly has a family, she asks for help! These Earp women understand duty and honor, but also understand they are better together! We is the Team!

Docstache – I was not down with Waves doing the whole BoBo-Brain-Fry thing to Doc. That Angel Power dealio is still very new to her and I’d assume she doesn’t know her own strength yet, so she could have easily taken Doc DOWN. I mean she took BoBo down, so why not a vampire? So basically, Waverly and I are in a fake fight right now & I'm not speaking to her.

Kayla – Speaking of, WTF did she do to Doc?! It looked a lot like what she did to Bobo, but Doc seemed to be relatively unscathed afterward. Anyway, back on track, I think that we saw some of Waverly in Guardian mode when she was on earth. In 3.12, she just showed up at the stairs with no recollection of how she got there. She told Charlie/Julian that he would have to tie her up to keep her from going there, like she knew in her human mind that she needed to stay away to be safe, but that her angel tendencies would take over and take her to the stairs (but I think her stair aversion is like, totally gone now). If she was having Guardian mode flashes on earth, it makes so much sense that those would be intensified in the garden. You can tell by the way she looks at Wynonna that she wants to get up, but that she can’t. Yet Wyn slips Julian’s ring on her finger, and suddenly she has autonomy again? And his ring is also what gave her angel powers on earth? It seems like the ring brings back your humanity while in the garden, and bring back your angel powers while on earth. Is that ring the way that Julian was able to descend from his post to “take the stairs” in the Gibson greenhouse? I think we shall see!

Earpnado – She definitely didn’t seem to be fully able to control what was happening to her in Guardian mode, so I’m glad that Waverly was still in there enough to react to Wynonna’s…proposal?  Also no wonder everyone on this show has a secret wife, they literally can’t stop proposing to each other.  Although if I was surrounded by people who looked like that I guess I’d propose to everyone every day too.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7. Last week we talked about a potential role-reversal for the Earp sisters, with Waverly being elevated to the ‘special’ one.  Now that they seem to have put their own respective curses behind them what do you think is next for them? Will shedding those burdens free them to live their lives or will whatever is going on in Purgatory keep them from moving forward?

Lindsey – Somehow I feel like the Earps are never going to be able to just sit in rocking chairs on the front porch.  Something is ALWAYS going to be threatening them or Purgatory.  Curse or no curse they have taken up the mantle as protectors of their little town.  I do think they move forward, putting the Earp curse behind them, which is freeing in some ways. I also think that Waverly isn’t quite done being the Guardian yet.  Eve is still out there, wearing her girlfriend’s face.  You know she is going to come back around to torture them some more. I do think that during the second go round Team Earp will ALL be around to bring the pain.

Jody – Again, did you not see my answer to question 3??? They clearly need to figure out how to fix what is going on in Purgatory before creepy bleeds-from-his-eyes Doc marries Eve/fake Nicole. FYI, I am mostly joking here, but this show is crazy enough that some of this could be true :)

Office – Yeah, the potential Earp Sisters role-reversal lasted for less than a full episode, surprise surprise, I was wrong again! Now, in this ep there was still talk of Wynonna being ‘the one’ -- Nicole said, “They (Doc & Waverly) need the Earp Heir.  … ONLY you (Wynonna) can – it HAS to be YOU, Wynonna.” And Waverly also referred to Wynonna as The Champion. However, Wynonna brushed this aside and implored them to live their own lives. Nevertheless, that doesn’t change the fact that Wynonna *is* still the Heir, magic gun or not. As for ‘living their own lives’, well I think someone in this show once said that ‘Sometimes, life chooses for us’. So, yeah, I don’t foresee that circumstances will allow them to live a normal life, but I also think they’re more okay with that fate than they’ve ever been. They still have a mission and a duty that life has chosen for them. But they also have each other, which they have chosen for themselves.

And speaking of ‘having each other which they have chosen for themselves’, the Earp Sister moment I might have loved the most was near the end when Wynonna smiled when she told Doc that they both know where Waverly went first. Wynonna’s attitude is not just begrudging acceptance of Nicole’s presence, but it’s absolute trust of Nicole with Waverly now, trust in a way she’s never trusted anyone else before to look after and care for Waverly. There’s no jealousy, there’s just love, so much love, for both Waverly and Nicole.  *blackout from feels*

Lynn – Oh lord! Shedding burdens only leads to more burdens! There is no way our heroes are coming home to the welcome they deserve from the people of Purgatory! Have you seen any of the episodes from previous seasons? What I am banking on is that our family of heroes finds a way to take Purgatory back and maybe, just maybe, they can secure a little peace and happiness together! Until the next big bad comes along!

Docstache – It’s Wynonna Earp, there’s no such thing as just living their lives! There are going to be monsters and mayhem for sure. The only thing I hope they have moved past is using Doc as the punching bag for all things wrong. He saved Waverly over and over again in that damn garden. The girl would legit be dead if it wasn’t for Doc. And no Waverly=no sex stairs, so all hail Doc Holliday!!

Kayla – I think throughout the series so far, that we have seen that fate and curses (and secret wives) have been outside forces that have seriously altered our gang’s ability to make decisions for themselves. Wynonna had a duty to send all revenants back to hell, and Dolls as the “boss” figure was responsible for enforcing that duty. Like when Wynonna didn’t want to kill the clockmaker, but it was her “job?” Then in season 2, we found that she doesn’t need to kill the revenants to break the curse, because BBD is on the case. She just needs to sign a blood contract and kill all the demons that entered the Triangle. In season 3 we find that it is Waverly’s duty to protect humanity. That she was put through a test and passed, and she is humanity’s only saving grace. That is what I think is so beautiful about Wynonna telling Waverly that its time to live for themselves. This curse has dictated their entire lives to that point, its time for our Earp girls to make their own decisions. Though it looks like maybe next week they’ll be walking into Nicole’s world, and they’ll be a nice role reversal where the Earps are trying to catch up to Sheriff Haught.

Earpnado – I can’t tell if throwing Bulshar’s ring was the end of that part of the story or a relic that will come back to haunt us later, just when we’ve forgotten about it.  Given that we don’t know where Eve really is and there are MONSTERS in the next episode, I’m positive that nothing easy is coming.  I’m sure they still have a metric fuckton of crazy in front of them.  A crazy they apparently plan to fight with super soakers and t-shirt cannons, in case you needed proof that this show plays by literally zero rules.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8. What question didn’t we ask that you think we should have and what is the answer to it?

Lindsey – What do you think the effects of Nicole’s isolation is going to have on her relationships with the rest of Team Earp going forward?

Hooboy…18 months, 3 weeks, and 4 days.  Alone.  Not knowing if your girlfriend and your family are ever going to come back to you.  A THREAT that forces you to retreat to the homestead and fortify it.  A leg that was broken in three places.  There is a LOT to unpack there.

First of all, I have this head cannon of Nicole limping around the homestead in a cast and then after 8 weeks taking a saw and cutting it off herself.  Anyone else?  Look, Nicole has GOT to have some post-traumatic stress.  How that manifests going forward is going to be interesting.  Does she not want to let Waverly out of her sight? Is she worried that at any point they are all going to disappear again?  All of those would be valid points of view based on her past reality.  My only hope is that we don’t lose the Nicole I love. I would really be sad if she were to become bitter and emotionally hard/distant.  I DO want to see what she went through though.  And I hope we get a glimpse into that. Also, what is her status with the PSD? Is there even a Sheriff’s department anymore?!?

Jody – LOADS!

* How come Eve was able to move BEFORE Waverly got off the throne, when Doc showed up after Waverly mind-crushed him? Rewatch this scene - I don't think it is because Waverly has doubts. Last we see Doc before this, Waverly has mind-crushed him. How come he was able to wake up and start fighting Eve as if nothing happened?

* Why throw the ring back into the garden?

* Why did Doc have Waverly’s satchel and book?

* Why did Doc throw the satchel into the well?

* Where the hell is Nedley?

Office – There are some obvious ones: Where is Jeremy? Where is Robin? Where is Nedley (other than in a basement swapping stories with Mercedes)? Where is Rachel in all this? Why are they using PVC piping to make gallows rather than the standard wood of the old west? Am I going to have to read all about the space-time continuum to understand the rest of this season? Are Waverly/Nicole in the same Purgatory as Doc/Wynonna? Has Nicole started seeing someone else in the last 18 months (my guess? Yes! Because I love pain and angst!)? BUT, I’m going to focus on this question because we deserve nice things: How much did your heart explode when Waverly looked deeply into Nicole’s eyes and said something she rarely says: “I love you.”?  Answer: Completely. My heart completely exploded. *aklsdjfha;dshg*

Lynn – I have no further questions because I have used up my quota of guesses for the other seven! But, I really do wonder who else besides Chrissy Nedley are we going to see back in Purgatory? Willa perhaps? Just asking for a few friends!

Docstache – What are you excited about in 403?

Doc. Holliday’s. Leather. Jacket. And. Gloves. I have fantasized about this look for four years. My fave movie of all time is Crybaby. And that movie started my whole love of hot dudes in biker jackets. I legit did a photoshop of Doc AS Crybaby. And it looked pretty much how Doc looks in that jacket. I am so fucking ready for this.

Kayla – I think that thing Waverly said about time being a flat circle, and that she has ALWAYS been in the garden, and will ALWAYS be in the garden is going to come back to bite us in our flat-throne-sitting-tushies. That’s as much as I’ve got for now (because see answers 1 and 2 !!!!)

Earpnado – Q - Did being around an actual child slow Wynonna’s sex jokes down?

A - Glad you asked.  No, no it did not.  If anything, she made 61% more.
